Title: Blog by Novelist William S. Frankl, MD

July 4, 2016

Today, July 4, 2016, is the birthday of our country, the United States of America. We are 240 years old. In that time, we have endured enormous successes and enormous failures. But, we have survived, so far, as the only “Superpower” on Earth ––– with the most robust economy and the most daunting military in the world. Yet, we have begun to lose the luster of our persona: after years of war against jihadist Islam; decaying values as a society, including a fading religious set of beliefs anchored in the Judeo-Christian ethic; a loss of patriotism in an increasing number of our children and grandchildren; and an utterly corrupt government with an astonishing disregard for honesty and the Constitution.

Will we survive as “A Shining City Upon the Hill” as John Winthrop imagined us at our beginnings and as President Ronald Reagan called us in his farewell address? Or will Rome’s Last Days be a distant mirror for America?

We can only hope, flight, and pray for a turnaround.
