Arabic in the Schools?

Last week, an Arabic studies program funded by a five-year 1.3 million Foreign Language Assistance Program federal grant was to start at Cross Timbers Intermediate School, and then be initiated at neighboring schools in the Mansfield Independent School District in Texas. The parents went ballistic! Almost 200 parents showed up at a meeting to question the wisdom of school officials attempting to start such a knuckleheaded program. They fought hard against the concept and at present have the upper hand ––– the school district has backed off plans for this Arabic studies program.

Almost 14% of American adults can’t read a newspaper or instructions on a prescription bottle. Doesn’t it make more sense to put federal monies into helping Americans learn to read and write English!?

Is this another example of an Obama administration running amok in a morass of political correctness? Or is there something more disturbing here? I leave it to you to think carefully about that.
