The Geographic and Electoral Divide

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Professor Joseph Olson of  Hemline  University  School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota  has done some research on the 2008 election. Here are some of his findings:

Number of States won by:
Democrats: 19
Republicans: 29

Square miles of land won by:
Democrats: 580,000
Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by:
Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: 2.1

Does this tell us that there is a gigantic cleavage in our society and our electoral system? The answer is “yes” and the divide is becoming progressively wider. It is exacerbated by the increasing alienation of the public and the disconnect between the people and their elected representatives. It threatens our future as a democratic republic.

Healthcare Drowned in a Sea of Paper

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

The House of Representatives is once more demonstrating its predilection for bizarre and semi-psychotic behavior. The leadership is hell-bent to pass a “ healthcare bill,” even if it means that the majority of Americans are opposed. But let’s be fair. Let’s assume the House’s imminent action is wise and well considered. Why the hell haven’t the vast majority of  members read HR 3962??  Well that’s because it’s more than 2000 pages long!! NO ONE KNOWS WHAT’S IN THE BILL ! They can only guess or believe what someone has told them. And they’re determined to pass it either today or tomorrow!

We were warned by none other than James Madison in The Federalist Papers # 62:

“It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed or revised before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man, who knows what the law is to-day, can guess what it will be to-morrow. Law is defined to be a rule of action; but how can that be a rule, which is little known, and less fixed?”

Can one say that Madison was prescient? Can one also say that if he were to return from the grave and see this monster bill, he’d be appalled?

And are there any in that poor, benighted group of politicians that even know that there was published in 1953 on page 737 in the journal, Nature, the one page article by Watson and Crick outlining for the first time, the structure of DNA.? In that one page, clearly written, lucid paper, the field of molecular biology was catapulted on to the main stage of Science and forever changed medicine in every respect. One page, mind you!! Only one page!!

And God help us, the House gives us over 2000 pages of incomprehensible regulations and laws that even the members don’t know or understand!  And they hope to pass this bill today or tomorrow. We’ve finally entered the era of government run amok!
